Gainesville Driver Killed in Collision with Horse

A horse wandered into predawn traffic on U.S. 129 in Hall County, GA on Thursday morning.  Satterfield, 56, of Comer, Georgia struck the horse near the intersection with Gaines Mill Road in Gainesville, GA just before 6 a.m.  The horse apparently went through the windshield and into the car, causing fatal blunt force trauma to Satterfield.  Because there were no skid marks, it appears Satterfield's car did not slow before colliding with the horse.  The horse was hit by another vehicle driving in the opposite direction.  The horse and Satterfield were killed as a result of the first collision; fortunately, the second driver was uninjured.  The Georgia State Patrol and the Georgia Department of Agriculture are attempting to locate the owner of the horse.  Depending on the circumstances of the animal's escape, the owner may have some liability for the accident and injuries it caused.  There is no statewide registry for horses and they are not required to be tagged in the same manner as cattle.  Identification of the owner may prove difficult and so far, no identification has been made.
