All across the country states are sending a clear message to drivers: get behind the wheel when you’re too intoxicated to drive, and you’ll be arrested.
Every year the federal government and advocacy groups team up to sponsor a Labor Day drunk driving crackdown. For about two weeks Georgia police will be out in force looking for drivers who appear to be under the influence of alcohol.
Police say they mean business during the crackdown, which runs from August 21, 2009 to Labor Day (September 7, 2009). No warnings will be given to drivers found over the legal limit: they’ll be arrested. Police warn that even first time offenders will go right to jail, no exceptions.
Drivers should be on the lookout for sobriety checkpoints and DUI enforcement patrols. With alcohol involved in one out of every three crashes in Georgia, authorities are anxious to make it clear to drivers that alcohol and vehicles don’t mix.
