A new YouTube Public Service Announcement details the dangers of texting while driving. The video opens with three young girls, more interested in their phone than the road ahead. What happens next begins a terrifying 4 minute long sequence of the deadly consequences. The video is intended to present the real dangers of driving while distracted, in this case by cell phones. The message is equally applicable to other forms of driver distraction - food or beverages, reaching for dropped items, or changing songs on a iPod. The images are realistic, play in real time, and are disturbing. But they accurately depict the aftermath of a violent collision - from the "jaws of life" being used to remove a passenger to life flight helicopters transporting her from the scene. The caption at the top asks viewers "Will you get the message?" As technology continues to invade our society, we could all use a reminder not to let it distract us from serious activities, such as driving. This video will certainly come to mind the next time I'm tempted to answer a call or send a quick text in the car.
