Atlanta firm implicated in second construction accident

Posted on Jul 26, 2009

There is a link between the recent parking deck collapse in Midtown and a walkway collapse at the Atlanta Botanical Garden last December that took the life of a worker and injured 18 others.  Both projects were built by the Hardin Construction Company of Atlanta.

The parking garage was originally built in 2002 and according to Hardin they were the construction manager on the project, not the actual builder.  Hardin stated that the Metromont Corporation designed, fabricated, and erected the garage.

According to information on the original building permit, the architect for the parking garage was Smallwood Reynolds Steward, an Atlanta based business.

The garage is owned by Atlantic Capital Properties and a building permit for its construction was issued in 2001 and a revised permit for the garage’s entrance filed in 2002.  Both permits led to inspections, and at the time no issues were found.

About 45 cars were damaged when part of the parking structure collapsed when a middle section of the Centergy fourth floor parking deck collapsed, causing the decks below to collapse down to the ground floor.  Police suspended an initial search of the garage when it became apparent that the structure was unsound.

Firefighters erected wooden structures to help maintain the garage’s integrity so that vehicles could be evacuated and the search continued.  In addition, engineers were brought in to help stabilize the structure.
