Atlanta’s Workers’ Compensation gets national attention

Posted on Sep 24, 2009

Detective Bob Buffington was shot in the back during a drug raid in 1977.  Over thirty years later, Buffington has filed an administrative complaint with the department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division.  He claims the City of Atlanta has discriminated against him under the guidelines of the Americans with Disabilities Act.  His actions may trigger a federal investigation into Atlanta’s Workers’ Compensation Program.

Buffington is one of five police officers whose plight was featured by The Sunday Paper on May 17th.  These officers experienced dangerous denials and delays in their requests for payment of medical care, medical supplies, and wheelchair-related modifications.  Following the story, all five officers say their situation has improved.

Buffington is filing the law suit because he says the city has a history of only providing assistance when threatened with a lawsuit.  He feels that many of the delays and denials that he’s experienced are retaliatory.  He wants the federal government to make certain that the City of Atlanta does not continue to treat others this way.
