DeKalb resident wins medical injury lawsuit

Posted on Nov 02, 2009

John Henry Howard, a 53 year old Ellenwood resident, was recently awarded more than $9 million in his medical injury lawsuit against Boston Men’s Health Center, Inc.

A DeKalb County jury awarded Howard $750,000 in compensatory damages and $8.5 million in punitive damages for permanent scarring resulting from a series of treatments for erectile dysfunction.

Howard sought treatment at Boston Medical Group’s Atlanta clinic in 2006. He received an injection of a proprietary formula containing papaverine. Papaverine is used to improve blood flow, but may also cause priaprism, tissue scarring and permanent damage, especially if multiple injections are given at the same site.  Howard purchased a six-month supply and was directed to give himself injections three times a week.

Howard believed the injections were a cure for his erectile dysfunction.

Boston Medical Group operates 22 clinics in the United States and six clinics overseas. It has been sued at least twice, but both suits were settled out of court.
