Georgia nursing home nurse accused of stealing patients’ drugs

Posted on Jun 22, 2009

Prescription drug abuse is a major issue in Georgia, so it is not surprising that the theft of powerful painkillers can happen.  What isn’t expected is that a nurse charged with caring for elderly patients would steal their drugs and resell them for profit.

A 46 year old nursing home employee from Ware County has been accused of doing just that.  The nurse, Mary Elizabeth Cooper, allegedly stole painkillers from her patients and took them home with her.

According to the Ware County Sherrif’s department, Cooper sold Hydrocodone pills to an undercover sheriff’s office employee multiple times.  Another individual, 42 year old Donavan Shawn Musgrove, was accused of soliciting customers for Cooper.

After a two-month long investigation Cooper was charged with two counts of sales of a schedule III drug, one count of sales of a schedule II drug, three counts of forgery, and three counts of fraudulently obtaining a controlled substance.

Musgrove was charged with one count of party to the crime of sales of a schedule II controlled substance.
