Georgia State Police crack down on speeding drivers

Posted on Jun 26, 2009

As part of a state-wide safety campaign intended to reduce Georgia road fatalities, law enforcement officers will be out looking for speeding drivers.  Officers are expected to concentrate their efforts on major highways like I-75, I-85, I-285 and I-20.

The speed traps are part of a system-wide crackdown on driver behaviors that contribute to serious and deadly motor vehicle accidents.  Speeding drivers are being targeted because speed is a leading contributor to fatal accidents on Georgia roads and highways.

The safety campaign is called 100 Days of Summer H.E.A.T (Highway Enforcement of Aggressive Traffic).  The campaign began in May and will extend through Labor Day weekend.

DeKalb County has its own initiative going on this month which targets the “Move Over” law.  The law – which many motorists don’t know or forget exists – is part of a national effort requiring that drivers move over or reduce speed when approaching a stationary emergency vehicle.

The Move Over law is important to DeKalb County officers because since 1999 150 officers have been killed along American highways by inattentive motorists.
