Two teenagers are dead and a third injured after the driver of the car lost control and crashed through a fence into a group of trees in Southwest Atlanta.
According to witnesses, the car, a Honda Accord, was traveling down Lawton Street at a very high rate of speed when the accident happened. Witness accounts disagree on one point: whether or not the police were chasing the Accord when the driver lost control.
According to Atlanta police, an officer spotted the car being driven without its headlights on at Joseph E. Lowery Blvd and Ralph David Abernathy Blvd. When an officer tried to initiate a traffic stop, the car fled the scene at a high rate of speed. The car was reported to have been stolen from the City of Atlanta.
Police insist that the officer trailing the vehicle gave up the chase when it became clear that it was becoming dangerous because of the excess speed. The crashed car was only found after witnesses pointed it out to police.
Some witnesses complained that the police did little to help the crash victims. Killed were Anthony Shaw and Antone Ray, both 16. The name of the third injured victim was not released.
